We’re making a list, checking it twice, we’re gonna make sure the kids have all things nice…!
We had several amazing blessings come in for our ministry work at the end of November (yahoo!), which enabled us to put together beautiful Christmas shoeboxes for ten of the young orphaned girls at St. John the Divine Orphans & Outreach. As many of the children live with a guardian in the township or informal settlement – a grandmother or family member – many of them are underprivileged and do not have regular access to everyday items we often take for granted.
Therefore we wanted to ensure that their box of goodies encompassed both practical hygiene and school supply items as well as some fun, little treats to enjoy! Each of the girls received a pretty gift box which held a toothbrush, vaseline, and facecloth for hygiene purposes; an eraser/sharpener, pencils, and colored pencils for school supplies (as in South Africa all children have to supply their own stationery which can be very costly for them); and some fun treats… a pretty compact mirror, a t-shirt, and some bright nail polish! We pray that these boxes of joy blessed the girls and showed them that they are loved and precious daughters of God.
Emma, our six-year-old daughter, took complete charge as the head elf and ensured that all the boxes were correctly packaged and wrapped…she loved shopping for all the gifts and picking them out for the girls. Upon delivery, she made sure that she was the one to do the job!
The gifts were handed out to the children over the course of the week. Read more about this on the St. John’s blog: Collect & Go Christmas Party.
A huge thank you to everyone who made these gifts possible! We cannot do this ministry without partners like you!
