The importance of Maslow’s hierarchy is never so apparent as here in the informal settlements of South Africa. WATER. One of the most basic physiological needs is often not readily available. One of our child-headed families was struggling with rashes and constant diarrhea. We found out that not only is their access to a toilet closed at 6 pm each evening, but they have no source of water close by. Just imagine struggling with diarrhea….having to use a bucket and having no water to wash yourself or the bucket of waste afterward, and being just a child, for that matter, with no parent to help you. This is the reality for many children in these situations.
We reached out to one of our partners, who so generously was able to support us in making a plan to get a water pipe from the nearest source to outside of this sweet family of children’s home. Oh, the joy and delight! They were so exuberant to be able to have water, freshwater, straight from a tap without having to walk a long distance to retrieve it! Their struggle with diarrhea has greatly improved due to this basic human need fulfilled! To which we are so thankful.
(We are raising support to put a long drop toilet at the back of their housing, so they can have a toilet of their own and one that is not locked up at night. Any contributions would be much appreciated – we need $200! Please click here and select “Orphan Ministry.” Many thanks!)
