During the month of January/February, we went a little farther afield than our usual area…going to the beautiful province of Mpumalanga. Here George was able to reconnect with children that he does not visit as often. The thirty Bokamoso children that we support, ages nine to fifteen, all attend the same Combined School. We were able to bless them all with food parcels as well as school shirts for those in need.
During our group time with the children, we were able to dig a little deeper into what’s going on in the lives of the children. It came to the surface that many concerning issues were happening amongst the school kids. Stories of drug, alcohol and sexual abuse were reported as well as issues of pornography and regular unprotected sex. It was also found that many of the children’s parents were unemployed and the families struggling with hunger.
Due to all these sad reports, the principal, social workers, and police were informed. A plan to do a large investigation was planned as well as the appropriate support measures for children affected. We are hoping that the children are going to benefit from further education around being safe sexually as well as keeping themselves safe from unhealthy practices and substances.
The time with these children was such a good reminder as to why all the children we help need safe adults to talk to and confide in, as well as continued education on what it means to keep themselves and others safe.
