June 2020
As we entered into the third month of lockdown (shelter in place) here in South Africa, the desperate needs of those left destitute due to unemployment and reduced resources have become more apparent all around us. At our local shopping center, over twenty moms with their children in tow gather each day to ask for assistance. We knew it was imperative to turn our attention from that of donating blankets to another more vital aspect of Maslow’s hierarchy of physiological needs…food! Specifically that of providing food for orphans and their foster families, many of whom are struggling due to lockdown.
Due to a generous donation, we had the joyful pleasure of going shopping for food for Hlanganani orphan care! We were able to purchase over 160 kgs of food (353 lbs)! 🌽🌽 This was enough food to support eight families for a month; with each family consisting of multiple children.
The day the food was distributed one of the families had run out of food and did not know how they were going to feed the children, but the Lord is Jehovah Jireh our Provider! Another smaller family who was blessed with a food parcel consists of two young orphaned sisters; the older one is currently completing her final year of school (Matric), she also has a little baby of her own whom she raises alone.
We were also blessed with clothing donations of around 100 articles of clothes and shoes this month! Many struggling families, homeless individuals, and young orphans were blessed to receive these items!
So…if you live in Joburg and have any clothing you no longer need… send them our way! Also, to support the work of Hlanganani Orphan Care check out www.hlanganani.org
